WOMEN NEW LONG SOLID image 004
Beautiful cotton embroidered chikankari long skirt with lace work. Thread work along with floral design is done.
Chikan embroidery is fascinating although it is lacking in color. It is worked with white cotton thread on a white base, usually muslin. The Gangetic plains, Uttar Pradesh and specially Lucknow, in particular have been he home and stronghold of this simple and dignified art. The origin of word chikan has not been traced. Perhaps it is a corrupt form of the word chekeen or sequin, a coin valued at about Rs. 4, which was current in several Indian ports. Traditionally the designs of chikankari were the typical paisley motifs and floral bunches, supported by leafy creepers, mostly of Mughal origin. Chikankari makes use of ordinary stitches like the stem stitch, herringbone stitch, buttonhole stitch etc.
